Hwang Hee-chan placed on Wolverhampton's release list as next destination remains unclear

Hwang Hee-chan, 30, has been placed on Wolverhampton Wanderers' release list.

The Daily Telegraph reported Wednesday (Korea Standard Time) on Wolverhampton's situation following the club's relegation to the English Championship, publishing a list of players available for transfer. "There will be departures," the outlet said. "Hwang Hee-chan, Boubacar Traore, Kiyan Hoever and Sasa Kalajdzic are all available. At least one goalkeeper from Jose Sa and Sam Johnstone could also leave."

Hwang joined Wolverhampton from RB Leipzig in 2021 and anchored the club's attack for five seasons. He was particularly effective in the 2023-24 season under manager Gary O'Neil, scoring 12 Premier League goals to establish himself as a key striker.

His form declined sharply afterward, however, as injuries mounted.

Football Insider said Hwang had been "particularly poor over the last two seasons," managing just five goals in his last 56 competitive appearances.

Last season, hampered by injury, Hwang made only 26 league appearances and contributed two goals and two assists. Wolverhampton finished bottom of the table and were relegated as Hwang struggled to deliver.

His movements ahead of the new season have also raised eyebrows. After completing his 2026 World Cup commitments, Hwang did not feature in any of Wolverhampton's preseason matches and was left out of the squad for the Carabao Cup fixture against Port Vale.

No next destination has been determined for Hwang, and no club has been publicly linked with a move for him.

"Whether a club comes in for Hwang before the transfer window closes remains to be seen," Football Insider added. "If not, he could remain part of the Wolverhampton squad for the new season."
