Driver scared by insect swerves into oncoming lane, killing 2 on motorcycle

A New Jersey driver lost control of her vehicle after a bug flew into the car, sending it into oncoming traffic and killing two people on a motorcycle in Pennsylvania.

According to the New York Post and other outlets, Bernadette Cobb, 55, was driving on a two-lane road in Brady Township, near Luthersburg, Pennsylvania, on Wednesday when her vehicle crossed into the oncoming lane and collided head-on with a 2013 Harley-Davidson motorcycle.

Investigators found that a bug had flown through the car window, startling Cobb, who tried to swat it away. Police said she briefly ducked her head while brushing off the insect, causing the vehicle to drift into the opposite lane.

A passenger in the car tried to grab the steering wheel and correct the vehicle's course, but could not prevent the crash.

Anthony Sones, 34, and Miranda Wormuth, 30, both of Hyde, Pennsylvania, were killed at the scene. The two had been in a relationship for 14 years, according to reports.

Cobb was arrested at the scene and was indicted on charges of vehicular homicide, negligent homicide, aggravated assault by vehicle and reckless driving, among others. She was later released after posting $100,000 bail.

Cobb's attorney, Brian Manchester, called the crash "a tragic accident." He said Cobb had been handcuffed before a crash reconstruction investigation was completed, adding, "We will defend her vigorously."
