Hwaseong Mayor Jeong Myeong-geun has been elected the 23rd chair of the Korea Major Cities Mayors Council.
In his inaugural address, Jeong expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him. "I am sincerely thankful for being entrusted with the weighty responsibility of serving as chair of the Korea Major Cities Mayors Council," he said. "It is a meaningful honor, but I feel an equally heavy sense of responsibility."
"I will carry the expectations and trust you have shown me, and faithfully fulfill my role to advance the council and help resolve the shared challenges facing member cities," he said.
Jeong said his years in public service, experience as a legislative aide in the National Assembly, and tenure as chair of the Special Cities Council had taught him firsthand how much time and effort it takes for local voices to reach the central government. He pledged to work to ensure that the positions of member cities are effectively conveyed to the government and the National Assembly and translated into meaningful change.
Jeong said the problems confronting large cities cannot be solved by any single city acting alone, and pledged to make the council a vehicle for sharing the experience and wisdom of member cities to tackle each city's challenges together.
"I will build a council with real strength — one that shares the experience and wisdom of member cities and works through their challenges together," he said. "Starting with myself, I will listen more and work harder alongside the mayors of member cities to grow the happiness of all residents and open a better future for our major cities."
