Seoul's Gangdong-gu will host the 8th Gangdong Youth Symphony Festival at the Han River Grand Theater of Gangdong Arts Center for three days from Aug. 27 through Aug. 29.
Now in its eighth year, the festival is a youth-centered cultural arts event where young musicians showcase their orchestral talents, exchange ideas and build camaraderie. It aims to give young performers a stage to shine while offering residents the chance to enjoy a variety of youth orchestra performances.
A total of 10 groups will take the stage — nine youth symphony ensembles selected through an open call, along with the Gangdong District Youth Symphony Orchestra — each bringing its own character and musicianship.
The festival runs across four performances. On Thursday at 7 p.m., Cheondong Student Orchestra and Woori Dongne Kkumnamu Arts School Orchestra will open the festival, followed on Friday at 7 p.m. by Myeongwon Orchestra and Terroir Orchestra.
Saturday features two performances, at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. The afternoon show will include Kkumkkuneun Percussion Ensemble, Clarinet Ensemble Aseuray and Myeongseong Youth Orchestra. The evening performance will feature Petit Junior Orchestra, Gangdong Phil Youth Chamber Orchestra and the Gangdong District Youth Symphony Orchestra.
The festival is particularly meaningful as a platform where young musicians share their distinct musical sensibilities and performance experiences, growing together in the process. Each group's performance offers a window into the talent and passion of the district's young musicians, and the event is expected to serve as an accessible introduction to classical music for families and residents of all backgrounds.
All performances are free and open to anyone aged 4 and older. Residents wishing to attend may pick up designated seat tickets on a first-come, first-served basis at the Han River Grand Theater ticket booth starting one hour before each performance. Doors open 30 minutes before showtime.
Gangdong-gu District Mayor Lee Su-hee said the festival was prepared so young musicians could freely display the skills they have honed and connect with one another through music. "We hope many residents will come to the concert hall and cheer on the dreams and passion of these young performers," she said.
