Over 70 Air Force recruits show suspected food poisoning symptoms

Military and health authorities have launched an investigation after a group of newly enlisted Air Force recruits developed symptoms consistent with food poisoning.

More than 70 Air Force recruits from the 881st intake, undergoing basic military training at the Basic Military Training Brigade under the Air Force Education and Training Command, began showing symptoms including abdominal pain and diarrhea on Monday, according to Yonhap.

The recruits received medication and intravenous fluid treatment at the unit's medical facility. Most have since recovered and returned to their unit. The Air Force said no severe cases have been reported.

Local health authorities are conducting an epidemiological investigation. Questions have also been raised over possible lapses in food ingredient management by a civilian catering contractor.

The Air Force said it carried out a special joint sanitation inspection of all dining facilities on the base immediately after the incident and ordered all recruits to wear masks and strengthen personal hygiene practices.
