Uljin-gun launches river maintenance projects ahead of chuseok typhoon season

Uljin-gun in North Gyeongsang Province announced Monday it is launching full-scale river maintenance projects along the Pyeonghae Namdaecheon, Giseong Cheoksan Stream and Uljin Namdaecheon to get ahead of typhoons and heavy rainfall that typically strike the East Coast around chuseok.

The county will invest 400 million won ($287,000) in the Pyeonghae Namdaecheon and Giseong Cheoksan Stream, clearing debris blocking waterways and restoring flow channels.

Work will cover 0.8 kilometers along the Pyeonghae Namdaecheon from the weir in front of the water purification plant to Samdal Bridge, and 1.0 kilometers of the Cheoksan Stream from Giseong Bridge to Gomsil Bridge in Jeongmyeong 1-ri. Construction is set to begin this month and wrap up by September.

In addition, the county will dredge the Uljin Namdaecheon downstream from Yongje Bridge in Howol 2-ri, progressively removing accumulated sediment.

The dredging will widen the river's flow cross-section to reduce flood risk during heavy downpours. Byproducts from the work will be sold in accordance with relevant regulations, with proceeds going toward bolstering county fiscal revenue.

"We will complete this river maintenance project without a hitch before chuseok and do our utmost to protect residents' lives and property from typhoons while creating a safe living environment," Uljin-gun chief Hwang I-ju said.
