Seongdong-gu Upgrades Smart City Control Center With High-Definition Display Wall

Seongdong-gu in Seoul has replaced the large-scale display wall at its Smart City Integrated Operations Center for the first time in 18 years, significantly strengthening the district's urban safety monitoring capabilities to enable faster responses to disasters and emergencies.

The Seongdong-gu Smart City Integrated Operations Center serves as the district's core surveillance hub, monitoring footage from closed-circuit television cameras installed across the district around the clock and providing a comprehensive picture of security, disaster and traffic conditions.

The center's large display wall is a key piece of equipment that allows operators to view footage from 4,829 CCTV cameras at 1,726 locations across the district at a glance. The system had been in continuous use since the center opened in December 2008 — nearly 18 years — and aging displays and frequent breakdowns had made it increasingly difficult to maintain a stable monitoring environment.

In response, the district used a special adjustment grant from the Seoul Metropolitan Government to complete a full replacement of the display wall with the latest high-definition video equipment this month.

The newly installed display wall features 18 55-inch high-definition panels arranged in a three-row, six-column multi-vision configuration. Ultra-slim bezels minimize the gaps between screens, and wide-viewing-angle panels ensure sharp visibility from broad angles, enabling more detailed and accurate surveillance than before.

A new multi-screen system was also installed, allowing operators to distribute and display footage from multiple CCTV cameras across the large wall flexibly depending on the situation. The upgrade is expected to help operators identify critical footage more quickly and precisely, securing the golden-hour window in emergencies and strengthening rapid coordination with police, fire departments and other relevant agencies.

The district said it plans to use the display wall replacement as a springboard to further enhance the operations center's monitoring capabilities and continuously advance its digital technology-based urban safety management system.

"The Smart City Integrated Operations Center is the core hub of urban safety in Seongdong-gu, watching over the entire district around the clock and responding to all manner of disasters and emergencies," Seongdong-gu District Mayor Yu Bo-hwa said. "With this display wall upgrade, we now have a monitoring environment that lets us grasp on-the-ground situations more quickly and accurately. We will continue to make active use of smart technology to build a seamless safety net that residents can count on."
