Built on success of AK Hongdae Project
Animate opens first Gyeonggi Province location
AK Plaza Suwon announced Thursday the official launch of Poptopia, the largest intellectual property content zone in southern Gyeonggi Province, riding the momentum of the retailer's AK Hongdae Project.
The name blends "pop culture" and "utopia," reflecting the space's ambition to become a destination for kidult and subculture fans to experience and share a wide range of IP content under one roof.
Poptopia marks the formal expansion of AK Plaza's IP content expertise — built at its Hongdae store — into the southern Gyeonggi market. The company piloted the AK Hongdae Project concept at the Suwon store in September last year and confirmed strong foot-traffic results.
The zone spans about 1,980 square meters on the fifth floor of the Suwon store. It features a renovated Gundam Base and Ichiban Kuji, along with a newly built capsule-toy shop called Gashapon Street. AK Plaza also secured the first Gyeonggi Province locations for Animate, the country's largest anime specialty retailer, and SMG Store, which specializes in pop-up shops for popular IP brands. Key merchandise vendors Theqoo and Wechai Goods have also joined the lineup. Together with the existing Dotori Forest and Tamiya outlets already at the Suwon store, Poptopia forms a large-scale IP content belt spanning figures, gacha toys, anime and character goods, and plastic model kits.
AK Plaza plans to operate Poptopia as an evolving content space that continuously introduces new brands and IP. Additional IP brands are set to be added in December.
"Poptopia is not a simple copy of AK Plaza Hongdae — it is an independent IP-focused space tailored to the needs of customers in southern Gyeonggi Province," an AK Plaza official said. "Drawing on our IP content experience, we will grow the Suwon store into a key hub representing southern Gyeonggi, while gradually expanding our IP specialization strategy to other stores."
