Yeungnam University professor named editor of international journal Water Research

Yeungnam University announced Thursday that Baek Sang-su, a professor in the Department of Environmental Engineering, has been named editor of Water Research, a leading international journal in the field of water and environmental science.

Baek will serve as editor for one year from August 2026 through August 2027, with the possibility of reappointment following a performance review.

Founded in 1967, Water Research is the flagship journal of the International Water Association and is published by global academic publisher Elsevier.

Since joining Yeungnam University's Department of Environmental Engineering in 2022, Baek has been actively conducting interdisciplinary research that integrates advanced digital technologies into water quality and aquatic environment studies.

His primary research areas include water quality modeling, AI and digital twin technologies. More recently, he has expanded his work to explore the convergence of environmental engineering and semiconductor technology, linking AI semiconductors with next-generation environmental and water quality management systems.

His research output earned him a place on Stanford University's list of the world's top 2 percent of researchers by field, published in 2025 based on Scopus data from Elsevier.

"It is a great honor to serve as editor of Water Research," Baek said. "I will work to actively engage with researchers around the world and help excellent work in the water and environmental field reach a broader global audience."
