More than 50 members of the Baeugesalgi Movement Dongdaemun-gu Council and senior residents take part in a home gardening experience, planting and tending to companion plants while learning about everyday carbon neutrality and connecting with neighbors.
Dongdaemun-gu in Seoul held a "carbon neutrality home gardening" event Friday, bringing together senior residents to plant and care for companion plants, the district office said.
The event drew about 50 participants, including Dongdaemun-gu District Mayor Choi Dong-min, Baeugesalgi Movement Dongdaemun-gu Council Chairman Yu Gang-sik, roughly 20 council members and about 30 senior residents.
Attendees planted companion plants in pots and tended to them together, reflecting on the meaning of carbon neutrality and how it can be practiced in everyday life.
Members and seniors also spent time making plants side by side and sharing conversation, fostering a sense of community among neighbors.
"It was especially meaningful to practice carbon neutrality in our daily lives by making companion plants together with our seniors," Yu said. "We will consistently continue a variety of activities that keep both the environment and our neighbors in mind."
District Mayor Choi Dong-min said he hoped the event would give participants "a warm moment to share warmth while tending to companion plants and briefly set aside the worries of daily life." He added that he hoped residents would share the happiness that small green plants bring — much like the terrariums made Friday — and carry the practice of carbon neutrality into their everyday routines.
The Baeugesalgi Movement Dongdaemun-gu Council consistently carries out a range of community activities — including safety culture campaigns, volunteer sharing drives, welfare facility support and environmental cleanup — to foster a healthy local community and promote neighborly care.
