Vice minister visits Namyangju to push for faster housing supply

Kim I-tak, First Vice Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, visited the Namyangju Dosim district and the Namyangju Wangsuk 2 public housing district in Gyeonggi Province on Friday, calling for swift action on housing supply at sites selected under the government's Aug. 13 rapid housing supply plan.

The Namyangju Dosim district, located in Wabu-eup, Namyangju, Gyeonggi Province, is considered a prime location for its proximity to Dosim Station on the Gyeongui-Jungang Line. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport plans to supply about 21,700 units there, targeting a ground-breaking in the first half of 2030 under an accelerated public land development model.

After touring the site, Kim said improving transportation and lifestyle conditions that residents can actually feel is just as important as the pace of housing supply. "Please actively manage the transportation improvement plans for the new sites, carefully reflect community input, and ensure the development benefits the local area," he said.

Kim then visited the Namyangju Wangsuk 1 and 2 public housing districts, the largest of the third-generation new towns with a combined 80,000 units planned. Construction is under way, with the first move-ins at Wangsuk 1 targeted for 2028 and Wangsuk 2 for 2029.

"The third-generation new towns must serve as the central pillar of the supply base to stabilize residential conditions in the greater Seoul area," Kim said. "Please respond proactively to the various issues that can arise during large-scale new town development and accelerate the pace of supply." He also urged officials to prioritize safety, quality and process management so that high-quality housing in prime locations is delivered swiftly, as promised to the public.

Meanwhile, speaking at a lecture for Namyangju city officials held afterward, Kim said the core of the Aug. 13 plan is to supply sufficient housing quickly enough for the public to feel the difference. "We will work closely with local governments to minimize inconvenience to residents and do our utmost to ensure that ground-breakings and move-ins actually follow through," he said.
