Chinese university lecturer to be publicly identified Tuesday in student murder case

A Chinese university lecturer detained on charges of killing a Chinese female international student who attended his class, then dismembering her body and disposing of the remains across the country, will have his identity publicly disclosed Tuesday.

The North Gyeongsang Province Police Agency held a personal information disclosure review committee Monday afternoon in the case of the suspect, identified only by his surname Jeong, 31, and decided to release his name, age and mugshot.

The committee voted to disclose the information after weighing the brutality of the crime, the severity of harm to the victim, the sufficiency of evidence gathered and the public interest in crime prevention.

Jeong's personal information will be posted on the North Gyeongsang Province Police Agency's website from 9 a.m. Tuesday through Sept. 30, a period of 30 days.

Jeong allegedly killed a Chinese female international student surnamed A in the early hours of Aug. 20 at his studio apartment in Hayang-eup, Gyeongsan, before dismembering her body and abandoning the remains in Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang Province, and Gunpo, Gyeonggi Province. He was taken into detention on Friday.

Jeong is also accused of filing a false missing-persons report with police after the killing to throw investigators off his trail. He faces additional charges of obstructing the investigation by disguising himself in women's clothing, traveling to Dongdaegu Station and turning off the victim's mobile phone.

Police have applied five charges against Jeong: murder, mutilation, abduction and concealment of a corpse, and obstruction of official duties through deception.

Police plan to hand the case over to prosecutors before Friday.
