Gangbuk-gu District Mayor Joins National Humiliation Day Memorial to Honor Independence and Democracy

Gangbuk-gu District Mayor Jeong Chang-su attended a joint memorial ceremony for independence movement patriots and a tribute to national democratic leaders at Suyu-ri, held Saturday at the grand hall of the National Institute for Reunification Education.

Jeong delivered remarks to attendees and laid flowers at the memorial altar for independence movement patriots, honoring those who gave their lives for national independence and democracy.

The event was organized to reflect on the memory of national humiliation, the sacrifices of independence movement patriots, the democratic republican spirit of the national democratic leaders enshrined at Suyu-ri, and the history of civic sovereignty running through the April 18 Democratic Uprising and the April 19 Revolution.

Participating organizations included the Association for Honoring the Descendants of Independence Patriots, the Committee for Carrying on the National Democratic Spirit of Suyu-ri, the April 18 Democratic Uprising Memorial Association, the April 19 Revolution Merit Association, the National Council for Reconciliation and Cooperation, the Korean Women's Association for National Unification, and the Korean National Social Organizations Council.

"Gangbuk-gu is a place that holds the history of Korea's independence and democracy," Jeong said. "We will do our utmost to spread awareness of our patriots' spirit and the values of democracy so they can be passed on to citizens and future generations."
