Eunpyeong-gu to mark Gender Equality Week with community events

Eunpyeong-gu in Seoul will hold Gender Equality Week commemorations Thursday and Friday to broaden public awareness of gender equality and promote a more equal culture, the district announced Tuesday.

Gender Equality Week, observed Sept. 1 through 7 under the Framework Act on Gender Equality, is a designated period aimed at eliminating gender discrimination across all areas of political, economic, social and cultural life and building a more equitable society.

This year's events are organized around the theme "Gender equality for all — broader and deeper in Eunpyeong," featuring a range of programs for residents to experience and engage with together.

On Thursday, District Mayor Kim Mi-kyung will visit a shelter for women who have experienced violence, review its operations and encourage staff. She will also hear from current and former residents and explore ways to strengthen victim support and inter-agency coordination.

On Friday afternoon, a gender equality culture and experience event will be held on the lawn at Eunpyeong Peace Park, where residents can learn about gender equality and personal safety through hands-on activities. Programs will include self-defense training, a gender equality quiz and puzzle, a picture-book parenting workshop on gender equality in the family, information and counseling on women's employment and entrepreneurship support programs, guidance on support for victims of domestic violence, stalking and dating violence, and a campaign promoting free menstrual products.

Eunpyeong-gu has consistently pursued gender equality policies across areas including employment, safety and care since being designated a women-friendly city in 2016. Last year, the district received a ministerial commendation from the Ministry of Health and Welfare for its gender equality policy work.

"Gender equality is not a mere slogan — it is a fundamental value that makes safe and happy daily life possible," District Mayor Kim said. "We will continue to listen to voices from the community and build Eunpyeong into a gender-equal city where everyone is respected and can live safely."
