District mayor to visit women's shelter to hear firsthand accounts and explore support measures; residents invited to cultural and hands-on programs at Eunpyeong Peace Park
Seoul's Eunpyeong-gu will hold a Gender Equality Week commemoration on Thursday and Friday to broaden public awareness of gender equality and promote an inclusive culture across the district.
Gender Equality Week, observed Sept. 1 through 7 under the Framework Act on Gender Equality, is a nationally designated period aimed at eliminating gender discrimination and building an equal society across politics, the economy, society and culture.
This year's events are organized around the theme "Gender Equality for All — Wider and Deeper in Eunpyeong," featuring a range of programs designed for residents to experience and engage with together.
On Thursday, Eunpyeong-gu District Mayor Kim Mi-kyung will visit a shelter for women who have experienced violence, reviewing its operations and encouraging staff. She will also hear from current and former residents and explore ways to strengthen victim support and inter-agency coordination.
The visit will focus particularly on listening directly to voices from the field — covering the full continuum from protection and recovery to independence and community reintegration for survivors of violence — and identifying practical support measures.
On Friday, a community cultural and hands-on event centered on gender equality and safety will run from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the lawn plaza of Eunpyeong Peace Park.
Programs at the venue include a self-defense experience, a gender equality quiz and puzzle activity, a picture-book parenting workshop on gender equality in the family, guidance and counseling on employment and startup support programs for women, information on support services for victims of domestic violence, stalking and dating violence, and a campaign promoting free menstrual products.
"Gender equality is not a mere slogan — it is a fundamental value that makes safe and happy everyday life possible," District Mayor Kim said. "We will continue to listen to voices from the field and build Eunpyeong into a gender-equal city where everyone is respected and can live safely."
