Identity of Jeong Chang-seong, suspect in killing of Chinese student in Gyeongsan, revealed

The identity of Jeong Chang-seong, a 31-year-old Chinese university lecturer detained on charges including murder and mutilation of a body in connection with the killing of a Chinese female student in her 20s in Gyeongsan, North Gyeongsang Province, has been made public.

The North Gyeongsang Provincial Police Agency said Tuesday that starting at 9 a.m., Jeong's name, age and mugshot would be posted on its website for 30 days.

The agency's personal information disclosure review committee convened Monday and voted to release the details.

The committee cited the gravity of the harm caused, the brutal nature of the crime, sufficient evidence and the public interest in crime prevention as grounds for its decision.

Police applied five charges against Jeong: murder, mutilation and abandonment of a corpse, obstruction of justice through deception, and unlawful confinement.

Jeong, who was detained Aug. 25, is accused of killing a 25-year-old Chinese female student, identified only by her surname A, at his studio apartment in Hayang-eup, Gyeongsan, on the morning of Aug. 20. He then allegedly mutilated her body and disposed of the remains in Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang Province, and Gunpo, Gyeonggi Province.

After the killing, Jeong allegedly filed a false missing-persons report with police to throw off the investigation, then disguised himself as a woman and traveled to Dongdaegu Station, where he turned off the victim's mobile phone.

Police are investigating the precise motive behind the crime using mobile phone forensics and other evidence.
