Gangdong-gu Celebrates Gender Equality Week 2026 to Spread Everyday Equality Culture

Gangdong-gu in Seoul held its "2026 Gender Equality Week Commemorative Event" on Wednesday at the grand hall on the fifth floor of the Gangdong-gu Office, marking Gender Equality Week (Sept. 1–7) with activities aimed at reaffirming the value of gender equality and spreading an equality-minded culture in everyday life.

Gender Equality Week is a statutory observance designated under the Framework Act on Gender Equality to eliminate gender-based discrimination and promote the realization of gender equality. The district organized the event to raise awareness and build broader public consensus on gender equality among residents.

The ceremony opened with a pre-show performance by pop-opera group Vivache, followed by a commendation ceremony honoring 13 individuals who have made notable contributions to building a gender-equal society.

A special guest lecture followed, with comedian-turned-speaker Lee Jeong-su delivering a candid and lighthearted talk on the theme "Family Is a Team." The session invited attendees to reflect on the importance of communication and cooperation among family members, offering an opportunity to reconnect with the values of gender equality in the context of home and family life.

The venue also featured promotional displays on gender equality and women-friendly city policies, alongside booths run by partner organizations highlighting their programs and services. Participating groups — including the Gangdong Family Center, the Gangdong Family Counseling Center, the Gangdong Single-Person Household Support Center, the Gangdong Women's Workforce Development Center, and the women's rights counseling center Sonya's House — introduced their respective programs and support services, giving residents a more accessible entry point into gender equality initiatives.

"Gender equality is a vital value for building a society where everyone is respected, free from prejudice and constraints based on gender," Gangdong-gu District Mayor Lee Su-hee said. "I hope this event helps broaden public understanding of gender equality and serves as a catalyst for residents to practice gender equality in their daily lives."
