Mapo-gu Public Library partners with local institutions to expand book curation, group lending and reading culture
District to work with agencies serving children, youth, women and seniors to develop new content and programs
Mapo-gu has launched a "Library Cooperation Platform" to strengthen the role of Mapo-gu Public Library as a hub for reading culture in the community.
The platform connects the library with local institutions in education, welfare, health and culture to deliver content and programs tailored to the needs and reading interests of each institution's users.
The core idea is to link the library with neighborhood organizations so that residents can access books and reading programs close to where they live, even without visiting a library in person.
Mapo-gu Sogeumnaru Public Library has been running a book curation series with the Mapo Women's Companion Center since Tuesday under the theme "Your First Encounter with Gender Equality Books."
Timed to coincide with Gender Equality Week, which runs from Tuesday through Monday, the library is displaying books on gender equality at the center to help foster an environment where women and men receive equal treatment and share equal responsibilities and rights in all areas of life.
In November, the library will present books on women's career values and paths under the theme "Are You Living the Life You Want?", giving both regular center users and visitors a chance to explore diverse perspectives on women's lives through reading.
Mapo-gu Seogang Public Library is running group lending and a range of programs in partnership with local institutions.
Building on existing ties with the Mapo Youth Counseling and Welfare Center, the Mapo-gu Mangwon Youth Culture Center, the Seoul Metropolitan Mapo Youth Center and Eland PEER, the library has added the Woori Neighborhood Care Center Mapo Branch No. 2 this year, lending a total of more than 1,000 books across five institutions.
The Woori Neighborhood Care Center Mapo Branch No. 2 has received more than 100 children's books to help young children encounter reading naturally and build a habit of it.
Seogang Library's "Outreach Library" program, designed to bridge the cultural gap for information-underserved groups, is also expanding residents' access to reading.
Instructors visit the Ahyeon Silver Day Care Center to read aloud to senior residents, and go to the Nanum Study Room community children's center, the Mapo-gu Mangwon Youth Culture Center and the Mangwon 1-dong Woori Neighborhood Care Center to do the same for elementary school students, providing age-tailored reading activities across generations.
Mapo Central Library also plans to run various book curation programs focused on youth, including at the Mapo Youth Startup and Employment Support Center Naru.
The district said it will continue to partner with institutions spanning the everyday lives of children, teenagers, young adults, women and seniors to identify content and programs that residents need, broadening the library's role in daily life.
"A library is not simply a facility for storing or lending books — it is a core foundation that leads a community's education and culture," District Mayor Yoo Dong-gyun said. "We will do our utmost to build a Mapo where books and people grow together and where everyone can enjoy reading close to home."
