Hyundai Motor Group signs green mobility MOUs with Oman to accelerate carbon neutrality push

Hyundai Motor Group is partnering with the Omani government to help the country achieve its "Vision 2040" goals and accelerate its transition to carbon neutrality.

The group signed MOUs with Oman's Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology (MTCIT) and Omani energy retailer OOMCO on Thursday (local time) at the Sultan Qaboos Cultural Complex in Salalah, Oman, it announced Friday.

The signing ceremony was attended by MTCIT Deputy Minister of Transport Khamis Al Shammakhi, OOMCO CEO Tariq Al Junaidi, and Hyundai Motor Group Executive Vice President and Future Strategy Division Head Jeong Ho-geun, among others.

Through the MOUs with Oman's transport ministry and local companies, Hyundai Motor Group will pursue sustainable mobility solutions in partnership with major Omani public institutions. The eco-friendly mobility solutions are expected to begin in the public transportation and public service sectors before expanding across Oman's broader mobility market.

At the heart of the partnership are the introduction of Oman's first hydrogen city buses and the construction of ultra-fast EV charging infrastructure.

Mwasalat, Oman's state-owned transport company, plans to designate a dedicated eco-friendly "Green Route" on Muscat's public transit network and deploy Hyundai Motor's Elec City hydrogen electric buses for a passenger transport pilot service.

OOMCO, the energy retail arm of Omani state energy group OQ, will operate Hyundai Kefico's 240-kilowatt ultra-fast EV chargers at an OOMCO-run filling station in the Halban area through its eco-friendly charging infrastructure subsidiary, Evo. The company plans to evaluate charging performance and user demand at the site over six months to lay the groundwork for future charging infrastructure expansion.

Hyundai Motor Group said it plans to use the partnership as a springboard to extend its eco-friendly mobility business — starting in Oman's public transportation sector — into the commercial vehicle and passenger car markets.

Meanwhile, Hyundai Motor Group has been stepping up its carbon neutrality efforts, including the construction of a waste-to-hydrogen facility in Cheongju, North Chungcheong Province, that produces clean hydrogen from biogas extracted from sewage waste.
