The US Bureau of Labor Statistics said Friday (local time) that nonfarm payrolls rose by 162,000 in August from the previous month.
The figure far exceeded analyst expectations of 53,000 new jobs, based on a Dow Jones survey.
The unemployment rate held steady at 4.1 percent, matching both the prior month's level and analyst forecasts.
