'Korean Derby' falls through as Hwang excluded, Kim benched in Bundesliga clash

A much-anticipated "Korean Derby" between Bayern Munich's Kim Min-jae and Schalke 04's Hwang Hee-chan — both born in 1996 — failed to materialize Sunday as neither player took part in the match.

The two South Korean internationals did not feature in the 2026-27 Bundesliga second-round match between Schalke and Bayern, played Sunday (Korean Standard Time) at Veltins-Arena in Gelsenkirchen, Germany.

Striker Hwang, who had been with Wolverhampton Wanderers in the English Championship, joined Schalke on loan just before the transfer deadline Wednesday. The Schalke-Bayern match was his new club's first fixture since the move.

Hwang was left out of the squad entirely, while center back Kim — who had started every official match for Bayern this season — was an unused substitute.

The match ended 0-0. Bayern dominated possession with 83 percent of the ball and registered five shots on target to Schalke's one, but could not find the net.

Bayern sit fourth with one win and one draw, while Schalke are 14th after one draw and one loss.
