Landslide kills 1, leaves 11 missing in China's Jiangxi as Typhoon Soulik strikes

A landslide triggered by Typhoon Soulik, the 18th named storm of the season, killed at least one person and left 11 others missing in China's Jiangxi Province, Chinese media reported Sunday.

According to state-run Xinhua News Agency and other Chinese outlets, the landslide struck a village in Ji'an, Jiangxi Province, at around 4 a.m. Saturday, damaging 12 homes. One resident was killed and 11 remain missing as authorities continue search operations.

Roads in the area were cut off immediately after the landslide, and water, electricity and communications services were severed, though Xinhua said access roads have since been largely restored and emergency communications networks established. Ji'an has seen a series of landslides, floods and debris flows in recent weeks due to sustained heavy rainfall, causing widespread damage to roads, power lines and communications infrastructure.

In some areas, severed communication lines left villages in effect isolated.

Soulik made three landfalls in China following an unusual track before dumping rain on Jiangxi Province for about seven days.

Chinese media described Soulik as the strongest typhoon to hit Jiangxi this year in terms of wind and rainfall, saying it has displaced approximately 161,500 people in the province alone.
