Father, bystander die saving boy swept away in stream

A father and another man died after jumping into a stream in North Gyeongsang Province to rescue an elementary school student who had been swept away by the current.

According to fire department authorities, the incident occurred at around 10:32 a.m. Saturday in a valley in Sugok-ri, Geunnam-myeon, Uljin-gun. A man in his 40s identified as A and another man in his 40s identified as B entered the water to save a boy being carried downstream, but neither was able to get back out.

A was pulled from the water by bystanders at the scene, while B was rescued by a 119 rescue team that responded to an emergency call.

Both men were found in cardiac arrest. Fire department personnel administered advanced resuscitation and transported them to a hospital, but both died.

A and B were acquaintances who had entered the water together to save the child. The boy was rescued safely, but the two men were unable to get out of the water on their own.

The group had traveled to Uljin for water activities on Saturday.

Police and fire department authorities are investigating the circumstances of the accident by interviewing witnesses and others present at the scene.
