Officials warn: claims expire after 5 years
Ulju-gun in Ulsan will spend the month of September conducting a sweeping review of unclaimed local tax refunds.
Local tax refunds arise from situations such as vehicle ownership transfers or deregistration after annual advance payment of automobile tax, national tax adjustments, erroneous filings, and duplicate payments. Officials say the number of unclaimed cases has been rising as taxpayers tend to overlook small refund amounts.
As of last month, Ulju-gun had 5,898 unclaimed local tax refund cases totaling 248 million won ($185,000). Of those, 2,963 cases — 50.2 percent of the total — involved amounts under 10,000 won.
Residents can apply for refunds through Wetax (wetax.go.kr), the national ARS local tax payment system (142211), the Kakao Talk channel for Ulsan Ulju-gun local tax refunds, or by phone. Applicants may also send a text message with their name, date of birth and bank account number to the dedicated refund hotline at 052-204-0515.
"If a local tax refund is not claimed within five years of the date it was issued, the right to claim it expires," a Ulju-gun official said.
