Iran president says Strait of Hormuz peace plan coordinated with supreme leader

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Saturday (local time) that his country's new peace proposal for reopening the Strait of Hormuz had been coordinated with Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei.

Speaking in excerpts from a CBS interview released by Iran's state-run IRNA news agency, Pezeshkian said, "If the United States accepts the proposal and fulfills its obligations, we will do the same."

"Coordination with the revolutionary leader (the supreme leader) has already taken place," he said, making clear that the Strait of Hormuz opening plan reflects a consensus among Iran's top leadership. Pezeshkian said a special six-member team comprising military, parliamentary and government representatives had been formed to handle the negotiations and holds full authority to make decisions on the peace proposal.

Iran called on the United States to meet three conditions for reopening the strait: the release of at least $12 billion in Iranian overseas frozen assets, the lifting of sanctions on Iranian oil exports, and an end to the US maritime blockade of Iran.

The US government has yet to issue an official response to Iran's proposal. However, Donald Trump rejected it, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Trump posted a map of the Middle East on Truth Social on Saturday renaming the Strait of Hormuz the "TRUMP STRAIT," a move widely seen as a signal that he does not recognize Iran's control over the waterway and intends to reject Tehran's proposal.
