S. Korea's Kim Min-sung secures bronze, advances to 80kg semifinal at Asian Games

South Korean boxer Kim Min-sung overcame a first-round deficit to secure a bronze medal at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games.

Kim, representing Korea National Sport University, defeated Indonesia's Maikel Roberd Muskita 4-1 on points in the men's 80kg quarterfinal at Nishio Gymnasium in Aichi Prefecture, Japan, on Sunday, advancing to the semifinals.

Asian Games boxing does not hold a separate third-place bout — both semifinal losers receive bronze medals. Kim's victory on Sunday therefore guaranteed him at least a bronze.

The start was shaky. In the first round, four of the five judges scored the round for Muskita, leaving Kim trailing 1-4.

The momentum shifted in the second round. Kim found gaps in his opponent's defense and landed a series of accurate punches, earning a perfect 10 from all five judges to level the contest.

He kept up the pressure in the third and final round, with four judges ruling in his favor to complete a 4-1 comeback victory.

Kim will next face Hussein Iyashaishi of Jordan, who beat China's Wang Xiaobao to reach the semifinals, in a bout for a place in the final on Tuesday. Having claimed bronze at both the Asian Championships in April and the second World Boxing Cup in June, Kim will be looking to upgrade his medal color at this tournament.

Other South Korean boxers are also still in medal contention. On Saturday, Sin Jae-yong advanced to the next round in the men's 55kg division via a walkover, while Kim Ki-chae stopped Pakistan's Irfan Khan by KO just after the start of the second round in the men's 90kg category.
