Merchants take the lead, offering food, entertainment and discounts
Nam-gu in Ulsan is launching a series of autumn festivals and night markets at four traditional markets — Ulsan Beonggae Market, Suam Market, Sinjeong Market and Yaeum Market — to boost foot traffic. Each event is led by the market's own merchants association and tailored to the character of its venue, offering food, hands-on activities and discount promotions.
Ulsan Beonggae Market will run a weekly "Wednesday Market" every Wednesday through Oct. 29, from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Fifteen shops inside the market will take part, serving more than 20 menu items including barbecue, braised pork trotters, grilled fish and green onion pancakes, alongside customer participation events.
Suam Market will hold a community festival on Friday, from noon to 4 p.m. Customers who spend 10,000 won ($7) or more will receive a 3,000 won discount, and the event will feature children's activity programs and food-sharing booths designed for families.
Sinjeong Market will host a two-day "Sinjeong Shopping Market Happy Festival & Night Bargain Hunt" from Oct. 23 to Oct. 24, running from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. each evening. The event will include a children's game zone, a night market where shoppers can hunt for deals after dark, a food court run directly by merchants, and a discount sales booth zone.
Yaeum Market will hold a community festival on Nov. 4, bringing together local residents and the traditional market.
A Nam-gu official said that because the autumn festivals and night markets are planned and operated by the merchants themselves, residents can expect a lively shopping experience with a wide range of entertainment, food and discount benefits.
