The South Jeolla-Gwangju integrated special city said Monday it plans to form a dedicated support team for bereaved families of the Dec. 29 Jeju Air passenger jet disaster.
The move follows Mayor Min Hyeong-bae's directive to establish a dedicated organization for family support after he attended a joint memorial rite at Muan International Airport on Friday.
The city is considering assigning the work to a social commemoration and solidarity team under the newly created Democratic Human Rights and Peace Bureau — set to be established as part of an organizational restructuring in October — or forming a separate dedicated team.
The team will work closely with bereaved families to identify ways to support them.
Spokesperson Bae Mi-gyeong said the team "will take on a comprehensive role in helping the bereaved families, including requesting the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport to investigate the cause of the disaster," adding that it "will also assist families of other social disasters in the region."
Earlier, after attending the chuseok joint memorial rite at Muan airport, Min pledged via SNS to form the special team, saying the city would "do everything it must, including supporting the bereaved families' return to everyday life and personally looking after the airport shelter."
