Min Hyeong-bae, mayor of the integrated Jeonnam-Gwangju Special City, said Wednesday that the full opening of Gwangju Metro Line 2 may not be achievable even by the 2035 target date.
Min made the remarks during a mayoral policy question session at the Muan Assembly hall of the Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City Council, responding to questions from lawmaker Lee Gwi-sun (Gwangsan 4) about delays to the Line 2 project.
Lee pressed the mayor on administrative accountability, citing repeated delays to the line's opening and poor progress management.
The line's Phase 1 opening has been pushed back to December 2028 and Phase 2 to December 2035. Civil engineering work on Phase 1 is 99 percent complete, but subsequent construction stages are averaging only about 50 percent completion.
"There are two sections where ground has not even been broken, making it difficult to predict whether the 2035 deadline can be met," Min said. "I apologize, and if there are areas where I must take responsibility, I will."
