The designation is expected to boost the local commercial district in synergy with Urim Market and Urim Matssomssigil, while opening the door to small business support programs and Onuri gift voucher registration.
Jungnang-gu designated Mangudajeong-gil, spanning the Sangbong 1-dong and Sinnae 1-dong neighborhoods, as its 15th alley shopping district and held a certificate presentation ceremony on Wednesday.
Mangudajeong-gil is a lifestyle-oriented commercial strip that formed around the Mangwoo police substation, with shops clustered within a residential area. Centered on restaurants and everyday consumer services, it draws a steady stream of local residents for their daily needs.
With the new designation, Jungnang-gu now counts 15 alley shopping districts in total. Merchants along Mangudajeong-gil will now be eligible to register as Onuri gift voucher merchants, making it more convenient for consumers to shop there. The designation also qualifies the strip to apply for facility and management modernization grant programs run by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups and the Seoul Metropolitan Government, laying the groundwork for further commercial revitalization.
The designation is also expected to have a positive ripple effect on the nearby Urim Market and the Urim Matssomssigil alley shopping district. Stronger links between the commercial zones are expected to spread visitor foot traffic and spending to surrounding areas, helping raise the overall competitiveness of the local economy.
The district has been providing a range of support to its alley shopping districts tailored to each area's characteristics and on-the-ground needs — including holiday events, festivals, themed street development, customer support center operations and merchant capacity-building programs. Going forward, the district plans to work closely with merchant associations to strengthen the growth foundation of each commercial zone and continue field-oriented support to help local spending translate into sales for small business owners.
Jungnang-gu District Mayor Ryu Gyeong-gi said alley commercial districts are "a precious foundation that sustains the local economy closest to residents' daily lives," adding that the district would "back Mangudajeong-gil so it can use this designation as a springboard to strengthen cooperation among merchants and grow into a vibrant lifestyle district that residents love to visit."
