Friday marks World Food Day
Screenings part of 'LG Hope Screen' CSR program
Meal support extended to Indonesia, India and beyond
LG Electronics announced Thursday that it will screen a campaign video produced by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (UNFAO) on outdoor digital billboards at Times Square in New York and Piccadilly Circus in London to mark World Food Day on Friday.
The screenings began Tuesday and will run through Oct. 23. The video captures people around the world working to address food insecurity and carries the message "Today's Innovation, Tomorrow's Nutrition," conveying the idea that collective effort can solve the global hunger crisis.
The initiative is part of LG Electronics' "LG Hope Screen" global corporate social responsibility program, which the company has run since 2011. The program screens public-interest videos from international organizations and NGOs on LG Electronics' digital billboards in New York and London to raise awareness of global issues.
LG Electronics is also conducting meal-support activities for vulnerable communities in countries where it operates. In Indonesia, the company provided meals to residents of Pasirlangu village in West Java, which was hit by a landslide earlier this year, and worked with local health centers to offer growth monitoring and health checkups for children affected by the disaster.
In India, the company ran its Life's Good Nutrition Diet Campaign, providing breakfast and lunch to 120,000 students at public schools across 16 states to address youth malnutrition. The company has also donated groceries to vulnerable groups in Iraq, Singapore and other countries as part of its broader efforts to combat hunger.
In South Korea, LG Electronics operates a "donation menu" program at its employee cafeterias. The program offers simplified meals with fewer banchan, or side dishes, and a contribution is set aside each time an employee chooses one of those options. The funds are used for volunteer activities, including providing side dishes to vulnerable households.
"We will continue to fulfill our role as a global corporate citizen through a range of activities to fight hunger, including spreading public-interest campaigns and providing meals to vulnerable communities," said Yoon Dae-sik, executive vice president for external affairs at LG Electronics.
