Mapo-gu District Mayor Yoo Dong-kyun took part in the "2026 Mapo-gu Disaster Response Safety Korea Drill" held Wednesday afternoon at the district office's disaster safety operations center and the Seoul Power Plant, overseeing inter-agency coordination and leading on-site response efforts.
The drill was based on a scenario in which a flammable gas leak triggers an explosion and fire at the Seoul Power Plant, followed by a crowd crush incident at the nearby Danginri Culture and Creative Power Plant.
About 500 participants took part, including personnel from the Mapo Fire Station, Mapo Police Station and military units, as well as members of the Mapo-gu Voluntary Disaster Prevention Corps, safety wardens and a civilian experience team.
Yoo first presided over a tabletop exercise at the disaster safety operations center on the first below-ground floor of the district office, in his capacity as head of the disaster safety response headquarters. Participants reviewed key response priorities — search-and-rescue support, resident evacuation, victim assistance and infrastructure restoration — and discussed response measures based on simulated field conditions.
He then moved to the Seoul Power Plant to oversee the field exercise, urging swift cooperation among agencies and a systematic approach to managing the disaster. During the field exercise, an integrated disaster-scene support center was activated to coordinate emergency evacuation and rescue operations, and staff reviewed procedures for running a victim family support team and a disaster victim support center.
"In a disaster, swift judgment and close cooperation among relevant agencies are paramount," Yoo said. "We will consistently review and improve our response systems through realistic drills to protect the lives and safety of our residents."
