Kim speaks out on YouTube show 'Kim Ji-sun Kim Hyo-jin's Graessyeo'
'I told them straight: don't live your life that way'
Comedian Kim Ji-sun has drawn attention after revealing why she cut ties with a former colleague.
Kim Ji-sun and Kim Hyo-jin discussed the etiquette of life events on their YouTube channel "Kim Ji-sun Kim Hyo-jin's Graessyeo" in a video titled "How far should you go when handing out wedding invitations?" published Wednesday.
On the subject of wedding invitations, Kim Ji-sun said she finds it burdensome when a junior colleague asks to meet separately just to hand one over, though she acknowledged there is something nicer about receiving one in person. "If someone comes by while you're working and drops off an invitation, it's a bit more thoughtful than just getting a ping on your phone," she said. She added that mass text messages feel a little impersonal.
On how widely to send invitations, she said it is better to notify everyone, even those unlikely to attend. "There are people who will complain, 'Why didn't you tell me?' even when they clearly weren't going to come. So even if you get some criticism, it's better to let everyone know. Whether they show up is their business."
On the question of gift amounts, she said giving too little is awkward. "If the venue is a hotel, I give a bit more. If I'm not staying for the meal, I adjust accordingly," she said.
Both hosts agreed that weddings have a way of sorting out relationships. "Once you've had a wedding, you find out who your real people are," they said.
Kim Ji-sun then opened up about a colleague she had cut off. "There was someone I used to work with. I went to their wedding, their first child's first birthday, their second child's first birthday — all of it. But they never came to a single one of mine," she said.
"Setting aside the fact that I have four kids, they didn't come to my wedding or anything else," she continued. She then said she noticed the person was not struggling financially — they were showing up to events hosted by producers and writers, she said, mimicking a fawning gesture by rubbing her hands together.
"So I told them straight: 'Don't live your life that way,'" Kim Ji-sun said, confirming she had confronted the person directly. "The character of that person …" she added, trailing off.
Kim Hyo-jin said people like that do not last long in the industry, and Kim Ji-sun agreed. "Exactly. They're not around anymore," she added.
Kim Hyo-jin said, "It all comes back around. It's not about expecting something in return — when you take care of people, good things come to you."
