Beats Renault Twingo, Clio and 5 other rivals
Tops 4 of 5 key evaluation criteria
Praised for price competitiveness and product quality
Volkswagen announced Tuesday that its new all-electric compact car, the ID. Polo, has won the economy car category at the 2027 German Car of the Year (GCOTY) awards.
The German Car of the Year is selected by an independent jury of 47 automotive journalists from Germany and abroad, who evaluate new models released over the past year across five criteria: design, driving performance, safety, practicality and innovation.
The economy car category covers new vehicles with a starting price below 25,000 euros ($28,000) in Germany. The ID. Polo beat seven competing models, including the Renault Twingo and Renault Clio, to claim the category title.
The ID. Polo is an all-electric reimagining of the Polo, Volkswagen's iconic bestseller with more than 20 million units sold worldwide. The model was first unveiled as a prototype at IAA Mobility 2025 last year and marks the first application of Volkswagen's new electric vehicle naming strategy — sharing the heritage names of existing models with the all-electric ID. family. The production version made its global debut in April, when Volkswagen also opened pre-orders in Germany.
"The ID. Polo reintroduces Volkswagen's signature bestseller for the electric age," said Kai Grünitz, member of the Volkswagen brand and Brand Group Core board of management responsible for technical development. "This award carries great significance as it recognizes the outstanding product quality of the ID. Polo — its attractive design, generous interior space, intuitive ease of use, high safety standards and advanced technology."
The ID. Polo outscored competing models in four of the five key evaluation criteria, demonstrating well-rounded product quality. It recorded 85.8 percent of the maximum score in "design and driving enjoyment," and earned consistently high marks in "safety and environment" at 84.2 percent, "relevance and innovation" at 83.8 percent, and "comfort and practicality" at 82.0 percent.
The ID. Polo also performed strongly in a special design evaluation covering all entries. Among the 47 GCOTY jurors, it ranked second for best interior design and third for best exterior design.
"The ID. Polo secured a clear category win, leading the second-place model in four of the five evaluation criteria," said Jens Meiners, co-founder of the German Car of the Year. "The jury's decisive choice reflects the importance of the ID. Polo to the Volkswagen brand."
Developed in Wolfsburg, Germany, the ID. Polo is built on the MEB+ electric vehicle platform and offers a spacious interior with seating for five adults. Its standard 441-liter trunk expands to a maximum of 1,240 liters with the rear seats folded, making it versatile for everyday commuting and a wide range of leisure activities.
The interior features a 10-inch digital cockpit and a 13-inch infotainment display, while physical buttons for key climate control functions enhance intuitive usability.
The ID. Polo starts at 24,995 euros in Germany.
"We will expand the range of choices so that more customers can experience electric vehicles, led by the ID. Polo — a car that combines reasonable pricing with high quality, practicality and advanced technology," a Volkswagen spokesperson said.
Meanwhile, Volkswagen Korea recently released a book marking the 50th anniversary of the high-performance hatchback Golf GTI. The publication covers the design and technological evolution of the model across eight generations — from the first generation in 1976 to the latest eighth — as well as the car culture built by Golf enthusiasts around the world.
