The Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency said Wednesday it operated a Korean pavilion at the Functional Fabric Fair 2026 Portland, held for two days from Oct. 27 (local time) at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland, Oregon, in partnership with the Korea Outdoor Sports Industry Association. It was the first time KOTRA had organized a Korean pavilion at the fair.

The Functional Fabric Fair is a sourcing-focused exhibition for functional materials, co-organized by US and German trade show companies and held in cities including New York and Portland. The event brings together high-performance fabrics and trimmings used in outdoor wear, activewear, everyday clothing, footwear and accessories, drawing brand designers and materials and procurement managers. This edition previewed fabrics and trends for the fall/winter 2026/27 season, with more than 350 companies exhibiting and around 2,000 visitors attending.

Fourteen Korean functional textile and materials companies — covering woven fabrics, knits, webbing and specialty yarns — took part in the pavilion. Buyers from more than 150 brands and companies, including Nike and Columbia Sportswear, visited the Korean pavilion, holding purchasing consultations while showing interest not only in the materials' performance but in Korean culture more broadly.

KOTRA arranged tailored meetings based on pre-event demand surveys that matched participating companies with prospective buyers by product category, and stationed dedicated staff on-site to support one-on-one consultations. A total of 213 export consultations took place during the fair, and more than 100 led to concrete follow-up discussions — including requests for prototypes and price quotes, KOTRA said.

Wig Korea, a specialty yarn maker, showcased recycled-material-based specialty yarns including a "chameleon" yarn that changes color depending on the viewing angle and light, a yarn that reacts to ultraviolet rays and temperature to shift color, a reflective yarn and an anti-counterfeiting yarn. The company held 28 consultations with global brands including Nike, Columbia Sportswear, Under Armour and New Era, discussing the development of new materials such as reflective piping and reflective film applications.

A representative of one buyer company at the fair said Korean materials firms stood out for their quality, delivery responsiveness and expertise in recycled and eco-friendly materials, adding that the company looked forward to future business and collaboration.

Kwon Oh-hyung, head of KOTRA's Silicon Valley trade office, said Portland is the hub of the US outdoor industry, where global outdoor and sports brands make materials development and purchasing decisions. "Demonstrating our differentiated materials technology here carries great significance as a springboard for entering markets across the United States," Kwon said.

Kwon added that KOTRA would do its utmost to provide follow-up support — building on the inaugural Korean pavilion as a bridgehead to expand into sports and fashion brands across the country, and helping Korean advanced materials technology converge with smart apparel, wearables, mobility and other high-tech industries to break into higher-value consumer goods markets.
