Korea Institute of Social Security Information Service announces winners of AI-based public innovation contest

Six standout ideas chosen to advance AI and data use in welfare service delivery

The Korea Institute of Social Security Information Service announced Wednesday that it has selected six outstanding ideas from its "2026 AI-Based Public Innovation Idea Contest."

The contest, held from Aug. 20 to Sept. 16, drew more than 250 submissions. Following internal and external reviews — including by a public participation innovation panel — judges selected one gold, two silver and three bronze award winners.

The gold award went to a proposal to improve the accuracy of welfare service information by cross-referencing current ordinances to verify application deadlines and eligibility dates.

The two silver awards recognized an idea to link medical expense documentation electronically to reduce the burden of submitting paper records, and a proposal to prevent erroneous social security benefit payments by detecting income and asset changes in advance. The three bronze awards went to a voucher refund inquiry service using private financial apps, a system for advance notification of changes, suspensions or recoveries of social security benefits, and a data-driven approach to the early identification of households in crisis.

The institute said it plans to share the selected ideas with relevant departments and explore ways to incorporate them into service upgrades and medium- to long-term innovation initiatives.

"As AI technology advances rapidly, service innovation through its use is becoming increasingly important in the public sector," said Korea Institute of Social Security Information Service President Kim Hyun-jun. "What matters more than adopting the technology itself is delivering tangible change that people can feel in their daily lives. We will examine the potential of AI and data based on public input and work to find ways to improve social security services."
