Netflix's 'Steps' OST drops Friday
Nominated at HMMA for animated film song
'Toy Story 5' track by Taylor Swift among competitors
After "Dracula," it is Cinderella's turn. BLACKPINK's Jennie has contributed to an animated film soundtrack for the first time, lending her voice to "Steps," a Netflix animated feature that reimagines Cinderella through the eyes of one of the wicked stepsisters. The song earned a nomination at a major Hollywood music awards show before the film even premieres, placing Jennie alongside Taylor Swift on the shortlist.
According to Netflix, "Someone to Hold" was released Friday at 2 p.m. across major music streaming platforms. The film itself will premiere globally on Netflix on Nov. 20.
"Steps" is an action comedy that retells the classic fairy tale from the perspective of stepsister Lilis. The stepsisters, long cast as villains, take center stage this time. Lilis (voiced by Ali Wong) sets off on an adventure with her sister Margo (Stephanie Hsu) and Cinderella (Amanda Seyfried) to save the kingdom from troll bikers and other villains. Bette Midler voices the Fairy Godmother, with Daniel Radcliffe and Peter Dinklage also joining the cast.
The film is the first feature-length production made entirely in-house by Netflix Animation Studio. John Ripa, co-director of "Raya and the Last Dragon," helms the project alongside Alice Chu, with comedian Amy Poehler serving as a producer. The film's visual style blends 18th-century French Rococo aesthetics with the raw energy of punk rock.
"Someone to Hold" serves as the film's climactic song, capturing the bond between the three sisters — Lilis, Margo and Cinderella. Grammy-nominated songwriter Justin Tranter wrote and produced the track, describing it as "pure joy that makes you want to dance," inspired by vintage and organic dance pop. The soundtrack features four original songs by Tranter, with the remaining tracks performed by British singer Rose Gray, EMEI and Seyfried, who voices Cinderella.
The song is currently nominated in the animated film song category at the Hollywood Music in Media Awards (HMMA), which recognizes music in film, television and video games and is widely regarded as a bellwether for the Academy Awards' music categories. Competing in the same category are "I Knew It, I Knew You," written and performed by Taylor Swift for "Toy Story 5," and "Bottle Up," a track for "PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie" co-written by Ed Sheeran and performed by the Backstreet Boys. Winners will be announced at a ceremony at Avalon Hollywood in Los Angeles on Nov. 18 (local time).
"I had so much fun working on my first song for an animated film," Jennie said. "I loved the warmth and personality of the characters, and I was so happy to be a small part of their world."
Jennie has already built a strong solo track record in the US market this year. "Dracula," her collaboration with Australian psychedelic pop project Tame Impala, peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 and spent 23 weeks total in the top 10. In September, it marked 16 consecutive weeks in the top 10, surpassing BTS's "Butter" — which held the record for 15 weeks — to set a new benchmark for K-pop artists. Jennie also released her digital EP "Fallen Angel" on Aug. 28.
