A self-deprecating meme is spreading among South Korean retail investors after the Samsung Lions clinched the Korean Series title: "Samsung championship bargain sale now in progress."
The joke draws on a tradition in which Samsung Group affiliates hold sweeping discount events to celebrate the baseball team's wins — only this time, it is the share prices of Samsung Electronics and other affiliates that have been doing the discounting.
The Lions defeated the KT Wiz 12-1 in Game 5 of the 2026 Shinhan SOL KBO Korean Series at Daegu Samsung Lions Park on Sunday, lifting the championship trophy for the first time in 12 years and for the ninth time overall. The club's previous title came in 2014.
As anticipation grew for a Samsung Group discount event following the Lions' victory, an image titled "Samsung Lions championship perks — full summary" began circulating online that day.
The image showed Samsung Electronics' 52-week high of 374,500 won ($279) marked down 48.33 percent to 193,500 won, as if the stock were on sale. Samsung Electro-Mechanics was depicted as discounted even more steeply — its 52-week high of 2.42 million won slashed 63 percent to 894,000 won.
Samsung Electronics shares have in fact fallen sharply in recent weeks. The stock closed at 188,700 won on Friday, down 36,300 won, or 16.13 percent, from 225,000 won at the end of the previous week on Oct. 30. SK hynix tumbled over the same period, dropping 286,000 won, or 20.17 percent, from 1.42 million won to 1.13 million won.
Comments on the post reflected a mix of dark humor and frustration. "So they started with the stocks first!" wrote one user. Another said, "They've been running a permanent sale since July — now they're going big in November." A third asked, "They're not going to discount it further, are they?" The remarks likened the affiliates' share price declines to an actual promotional event.
Meanwhile, Samsung Group affiliates are reportedly considering holding large-scale discount events again this year to mark the Lions' championship. When the team last won in 2014, Samsung Electronics and Cheil Industries both held Korean Series victory celebrations and major promotional sales.
