Students condemn Hanyang University professor's remarks about suppressing youth 'with power' as 'fascist'

Students at Hanyang University have condemned adjunct professor Jung Jun-hee of the Department of Information Society and Media at the university's ERICA campus after he said people in their 20s should be "subdued with power."

A post titled "We strongly condemn Professor Jung Jun-hee's undemocratic and violent remarks" appeared Sunday on Everytime, an anonymous online community for college students.

The author, who identified themselves as a Hanyang University student, said Jung had publicly mocked and demeaned young people in their 20s on a broadcast, mimicking their manner of expression with crude imitation.

"In a place of learning where diverse values coexist and rational debate is expected, a scholar who should be teaching respect for pluralism and the essence of media has laid bare a fascist mindset — that a generation holding different views must be suppressed with a 'club' and 'power,'" the author wrote.

The author added that such remarks revealed Jung viewed students not as equals deserving of respect, but as subjects to be blindly controlled and disciplined.

The student called for an immediate and sincere public apology to the younger generation and to current students, saying Jung's comments had insulted the entire student body and seriously damaged the university's reputation.

Jung made the remarks June 5 on "Maebulshow," a progressive-leaning YouTube channel. "People in their 20s cannot be persuaded — they must be subdued with power," he said. "They need to be pushed along by the direction that power broadly drives. I think it will be impossible to make them support our power by convincing them."

He also said, "You should not think of them as competitors in terms of specific values, logic or facts. They cannot be broken by facts, logic or values. It is necessary to raise a club in a lawful way."

Jung hosted MBC's current affairs program "100-Minute Debate" for about four years beginning in 2020 and currently runs a YouTube channel called "Jung Jun-hee's Hash TV."
