Chinese man arrested for killing supermarket owner, stealing 700,000 won

A Chinese national who killed a supermarket owner and fled with cash has been arrested.

The Incheon Michuhol Police Station said Monday it had apprehended a Chinese man in his 40s, identified only as A, on charges of robbery and murder.

A is accused of beating to death B, a man in his 70s who owned a small supermarket in Dohwa-dong, Michuhol-gu, Incheon, at around 9 p.m. on Saturday, then stealing 700,000 won (about $454) before fleeing.

Police received a report that a person had collapsed inside the supermarket and launched a manhunt. They arrested A the following afternoon — Sunday — at a cafe in Seoul.

The supermarket was a small shop selling everyday necessities, and investigators found that B had been alone in the store at the time of the attack.

Police believe A brought a blunt weapon to the scene in advance with the intent to steal money and plan to investigate the full circumstances of the crime.

"A and the victim appear to have had no prior relationship," a police official said, adding that authorities plan to seek an arrest warrant for A.
