Hana Financial partners with Defense Ministry to provide 1 billion won in annual welfare benefits for troops

Hana Financial Group announced Tuesday it will launch the "Hero with Hana" program to boost morale and improve welfare for military service members.

Under the MOU, Hana Financial Group plans to provide approximately 1 billion won ($647,000) in annual welfare benefits to around 300 service members and their families each year.

First, the group will support 200 service members who are raising children or parents with disabilities. Benefits will cover rehabilitation and psychological treatment costs, medical expenses, and the purchase of assistive devices such as wheelchairs.

For 60 service members who died in the line of duty, were wounded in action, or are stationed at remote posts, the group will fund purchases to improve their children's learning environments — including study furniture such as desks, and digital devices including laptops, tablets and desktop computers. An additional 40 service members who sustained physical disabilities from injuries during active duty will receive support covering rehabilitation and psychological treatment costs, the fabrication of custom prosthetic limbs, and the purchase of medical assistive devices such as wheelchairs.

At the signing ceremony Monday, Minister of National Defense Ahn Kyu-baek expressed deep gratitude for "Hana Financial Group's warm support for the families of service members who died or were injured protecting the nation, and for troops supporting family members with disabilities." He added that the ministry "will fulfill its responsibility to the end to honor the noble sacrifice and dedication of our heroes and ensure that their extraordinary commitment is met with extraordinary recognition."

Hana Financial Group Chairman Ham Young-joo said it was meaningful to work alongside the Ministry of National Defense in June — the month of national patriotism and veterans' commemoration — to support the morale and welfare of service members and their families. "We will take the lead as a steadfast partner in the lives of service members and their families through a sincere commitment to finance's social responsibility toward their dedication and sacrifice," he said.

Hana Financial Group built the "Hana Hall" on Yeonpyeong Island in 2013 to serve troops, their families and local residents, and has continuously provided scholarships for service members and the children of fallen soldiers through the Marine Corps Deoksan Scholarship Foundation since 2017. The group also conducts financial literacy education and investment consulting visits to military units, and offers a range of tailored financial products — the Hana Narasarang Card, the Soldier Tomorrow Preparation Savings account, the Lifetime Soldier Savings account, and the Military Lifestyle Stabilization Loan. It also opened the "Hana Narasarang Card Lounge," a combined rest and amenity space at Euljiro 1-ga Station in Seoul, for service members and Hana Narasarang Card customers.
