KAI signs MOU with Italy's GE Avio for joint research on power transmission systems

Korea Aerospace Industries announced Friday that it will conduct joint research with Italian aircraft manufacturer GE Avio to localize power transmission systems.

Senior executives from both companies — including KAI President Kim Jong-chul and GE Avio Chief Operating Officer Vito Alfarano — signed a memorandum of understanding at GE Avio's headquarters in Turin, Italy, on Thursday.

GE Avio holds world-class expertise in rotorcraft power transmission systems and has previously collaborated with KAI, including on the localization of the main gearbox for the Surion helicopter.

Under the agreement, the two companies will pursue joint research and marketing aimed at entering the global aviation components market. They will also cooperate on advanced small- and medium-sized aircraft engine technology and hybrid propulsion systems in preparation for the future unmanned aerial vehicle market, and will establish a joint working group to oversee implementation.

In addition, the companies plan to explore new project opportunities, including research into power transmission system technology applicable to next-generation aircraft. They are also reviewing joint participation in EU research and development funding programs.

"This agreement will serve as an opportunity to strengthen the core technological competitiveness of South Korea's rotorcraft sector and expand our global cooperation network," Kim said. "Building on our accumulated technology, we will continue to expand opportunities for the growth of the domestic aviation industry and entry into the global aviation components market."

Alfarano said he looks forward to "creating new technological and business achievements through cooperation with KAI, drawing on the expertise and experience both companies bring to the table."
