Jang Dong-hyeok: 'Youth and citizens are calling for a by-election while parties squabble over who should resign'

People Power Party leader Jang Dong-hyeok, who has been making frequent appearances at Olympic Park as a private citizen, lamented Friday that young people and ordinary citizens are calling for a by-election while the ruling and opposition parties remain preoccupied with demands for their respective leaders to resign.

In a Facebook post Friday, Jang said the Democratic Party was demanding that its leader Jung Chung-rae step down on the grounds that the party had lost, while the People Power Party was calling for his own resignation on the same grounds. "It's gotten to the point where the two party leaders might as well settle it with rock-paper-scissors," he said, criticizing what he called the behavior of politicians.

He particularly criticized some People Power Party lawmakers for labeling youth and citizens who had gathered at the park as "far-right" or "election fraud theorists." "This is exactly what prevents young people — even those who deeply dislike the Democratic Party — from opening their hearts to the People Power Party," he said.

He also took a swipe at lawmakers pushing for his resignation, saying they refuse to look at polling data showing a golden cross in the party's approval rating or surveys indicating the People Power Party performed better than expected.

Turning to Democratic Party leader Jung Chung-rae, Jang urged him to launch the special prosecutor investigation he had promised without delay. "Now is not the time to watch Lee Jae-myung's back as a 'short-term power holder' — it is time to look only at the people," he said, calling on Jung to honor the agreement to launch a special prosecutor probe into the National Election Commission.
