National cemetery visit to precede regional policy meeting
Democratic Party of Korea leader Jung Chung-rae will visit Gwangju on Friday, continuing a series of trips to the Honam region.
Jung plans to pay his respects at the May 18 National Cemetery before convening a field supreme council meeting at the Kim Dae-jung Convention Center to discuss regional issues. He also made a private visit to a Buddhist temple in North Jeolla Province on Tuesday.
Some analysts say the Honam visits signal Jung's intention to run in the Aug. 17 party leadership election despite calls for accountability over the June 3 local elections. Honam has the second-largest bloc of rights-holding party members — the electorate for the leadership vote — after the Greater Seoul metropolitan area.
