'My brother got 500 million won, I got 30 million' — daughter fumes over tenfold gap in parents' wedding support

A woman's account of receiving more than ten times less in wedding support from her parents than her brother did has struck a chord online.

A post titled "I resent my parents for treating their son and daughter differently" appeared Wednesday on Blind, an anonymous community app popular among office workers.

The author, identified only as A, wrote that her parents gave her brother around 500 million won to buy an apartment in the Greater Seoul area when he got married. When her own wedding came around, they promised her 100 million won — but her father had just retired by then, so she let it go without saying anything.

A said that even a year into her marriage, she had received only 30 million won (about $19,600). When she asked her parents to transfer the money quickly, noting that gifts of up to 100 million won for a child's wedding are tax-exempt, they kept putting her off, saying they were having trouble finding a new tenant. She added that when her sister-in-law became pregnant, her parents gave the couple more than 10 million won.

"My in-laws contributed more than 800 million won, and my own family ended up giving just 30 million won. I feel bad for my husband," she wrote. While she said she could understand parents giving a son somewhat more support, a tenfold gap left her disillusioned. "I don't even want to visit my parents anymore," she said.

She also wrote that when her parents recently mentioned wanting a smartphone priced in the 2-million-won range, she cut the conversation short, saying she had no money. She said she had bought her in-laws a laptop but would no longer spend money on her own parents.

"It's not that I'm struggling because I didn't get the 100 million won — it's the discrimination itself that drains me and breaks my heart," she wrote, adding that she would leave the responsibility of caring for her parents in their old age to her brother and his wife.
