Former Samsung Electro-Mechanics adviser faces appeal ruling in elderly confinement case

Im Woo-jae, a former adviser at Samsung Electro-Mechanics who was sentenced to prison in a case involving the unlawful confinement of an elderly person, is set to receive an appeals court ruling Thursday.

The Seoul High Court will hold the appeals sentencing hearing for Im, who was indicted on charges of aggravated confinement causing bodily harm, at 2 p.m. Thursday, according to YTN.

A shaman identified only by her surname Park, known as Im's romantic partner, was previously indicted after she allegedly had the son of an acquaintance, surnamed Ko, confine and assault Ko's grandmother following a falling-out between the two women.

When police launched an investigation after the victim escaped, Im was charged with participating in a staged suicide scheme — filing a false missing-persons report for Ko's daughter and fabricating a suicide note. He was sentenced to one year in prison at trial.

Prosecutors sought the same one-year prison term at last month's final appeals hearing.
