Joint public-private effort held near Wangun Elementary and Middle schools
Hyundai Steel's Suncheon factory held a joint public-private traffic safety campaign Thursday near Suncheon Wangun Middle School and Wangun Elementary School as part of its "H-type Shining Road" project.
About 30 participants took part, including staff from Hyundai Steel's Suncheon factory, Suncheon City Hall's social welfare division, the Suncheon Police Station's traffic and crime prevention units, the Suncheon Community Welfare Center and a model drivers' association. The group worked to create safer walking conditions for students on their morning commute.
The area around the two schools sits adjacent to apartment complexes and draws a high proportion of students who walk to school. Heavy vehicle traffic during morning and evening rush hours has consistently raised pedestrian safety concerns in the neighborhood.
Participants held pickets and banners urging pedestrians and drivers to maintain safe following distances, avoid using smartphones while walking, refrain from jaywalking, and drive with consideration for pedestrians. They also distributed handheld fans as promotional items to raise awareness of traffic safety.
The "H-type Shining Road" project is Hyundai Steel's flagship employee-funded corporate social responsibility initiative, which the company has run since 2021.
Designed to reduce traffic accidents and create safer road environments, the project involves installing traffic safety infrastructure — including ground-level LED signals and red countdown indicators — in cooperation with Suncheon City, police and the Suncheon Community Welfare Center, alongside ongoing joint public-private campaigns.
Hyundai Steel has been working to prevent traffic accidents by partnering with local institutions to improve safety infrastructure and promote a road safety culture.
"Pedestrian safety during rush hours is especially critical in this area, given how many students walk to school from nearby apartment complexes," a Hyundai Steel official said. "We will continue to pursue a wide range of traffic safety activities to help establish a safer road culture."
Beyond the Suncheon factory, Hyundai Steel is also carrying out traffic safety improvements and awareness campaigns under the "H-type Shining Road" project at its facilities in Dangjin, Incheon and Pohang.
