Taihan Cable & Solution pursues joint research with Myongji University to verify submarine cable performance

Taihan Cable & Solution announced Monday that it will pursue joint industry-academic research to verify the performance of submarine cables.

On July 10, the company signed an MOU with the Myongji University Hybrid Structural Testing Center in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province, to cooperate on structural performance verification of submarine cables.

The signing ceremony was attended by Kim Hyun-ju, executive vice president and head of production and technology at Taihan Cable & Solution, and Hong Dong-seok, executive director and head of the technology research institute, along with Kwon Seung-hee, director of the Myongji University Hybrid Structural Testing Center, and Han Jong-uk, head of the center's operations division.

The two institutions plan to advance their structural performance verification framework for submarine cables and pursue related technology research. They will jointly conduct structural performance testing and evaluation of power and communications cables — including submarine cables — as well as industrial products, and will expand cooperation on related technology research.

The Myongji University Hybrid Structural Testing Center is a specialized research institution that evaluates the performance of structures and industrial products. It has particular expertise in assessing the safety and performance of industrial structures and products using hybrid testing technology that simulates real-world conditions.

Taihan Cable & Solution plans to leverage the center's specialized testing infrastructure to advance its submarine cable verification framework and expand its testing technology and research capabilities. The agreement also positions the company to respond to the anticipated growth of the floating offshore wind market and to build a domestic foundation for rapidly advancing dynamic cable development, performance evaluation and certification.

Taihan Cable & Solution had earlier completed a dedicated test center for HVDC (high-voltage direct current) cables at its cable factory in Dangjin, South Chungcheong Province, establishing a product testing and certification infrastructure. The latest agreement extends that capability into the structural verification domain.

"In the submarine cable market, the ability to verify product reliability and quality has become as important a competitive factor as technological capability," a Taihan Cable & Solution official said. "Through this agreement, we will expand our structural verification capabilities and continue to raise the quality and product reliability that global markets demand."

The official added that the company would continue to increase investment in research and development and testing infrastructure to strengthen its submarine cable and HVDC business capabilities.

Meanwhile, Taihan Cable & Solution continues to invest in expanding its submarine cable and HVDC businesses. The company is building a second submarine cable factory in Dangjin, South Chungcheong Province, and has secured the Scandi Connector, an 11,000-ton dedicated submarine cable-laying vessel, as it works to expand production and installation capacity alongside its testing and verification framework.
