Busan, Gangneung among additions; all station eateries to be certified by year-end
Travelers passing through KTX stations will have more options to dine with confidence as the food safety zone program expands to additional stations nationwide.
Korea Railroad Corporation (Korail) announced Monday that 15 major KTX stations — Busan, Dong-daegu, Daejeon, Yeongdeungpo, Ulsan, Suwon, Pohang, Cheonan-Asan, Gwangmyeong, Osong, Gyeongju, Iksan, Seo-daejeon, Cheongnyangni and Gangneung — have been added to the food safety zone program, following the earlier designation of Seoul Station and Yongsan Station.
A food safety zone is an area where a set proportion of restaurants have earned "food safety establishment" certification for superior hygiene management. The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety designates such zones.
Korail held a designation ceremony at Busan Station on Monday alongside the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety and Korail Distribution, using the occasion to run a public campaign on food poisoning prevention.
After the ministry presented an official food safety zone plaque, attendees distributed hand sanitizers and other commemorative items to restaurant staff and passengers inside Busan Station, raising awareness about hygiene management during the vacation season.
Korail plans to complete food safety establishment certification for restaurants at all of its stations by the end of the year.
"Our efforts to raise hygiene standards across railway stations have led to this expansion of food safety zone designations," said Won Hyeong-min, head of Korail's new growth business division. "We will continue to do our best so that everyone can use station restaurants with confidence."
