South Korea's first public-private advanced manufacturing startup hub opens in Pohang

South Korea's first public-private advanced manufacturing startup hub, designed to help technologies developed in research laboratories reach actual product manufacturing, has opened in Pohang, North Gyeongsang Province. The center aims to support the mass production of technologies that have remained at the research and experimental stage, backing the growth of regional manufacturing startups.

The Ministry of SMEs and Startups held an opening ceremony Wednesday for the RIST Advanced Manufacturing Incubating Center in Pohang, North Gyeongsang Province. The center is the country's first public-private regional advanced manufacturing startup hub, established jointly by the ministry, North Gyeongsang Province, Pohang city, the Research Institute of Industrial Science and Technology (RIST) and Posco Group.

The center was created to address the difficulties advanced manufacturing startups face when translating technologies from the research and experimental stage into actual products and production processes. Resident companies will have access to factory-type workspace and cleanrooms along with other manufacturing demonstration infrastructure, and will receive technical support from RIST covering process design, testing and analysis, reliability evaluation, and mass-production process engineering.

In addition, the center will connect resident companies with Posco Group's investment and overseas expansion support, while working with regional institutions — including North Gyeongsang Province, Pohang city and the North Gyeongsang Technopark — to link companies with research and development projects, identify promising firms and help them secure space in industrial complexes.

The center currently houses startups in advanced manufacturing fields including secondary battery recycling, high-temperature water electrolysis stacks, distributed energy control solutions and eco-friendly new-material packaging. Going forward, it plans to intensively incubate up to 10 companies per year and operate a flexible graduation system on a three-to-five-year cycle to continuously identify and attract promising manufacturing startups.

Advanced manufacturing startups often succeed in developing technology but struggle to commercialize it due to the high costs and lack of specialized infrastructure needed for prototype production, process verification and securing mass-production equipment. The center combines government-built infrastructure with RIST's technical support and Posco Group's investment and commercialization capabilities.

Mok Seung-hwan, director general for startup and venture innovation at the Ministry of SMEs and Startups, said the center is "the region's first public-private manufacturing startup hub to help startups leap from laboratory-stage technology to mass production." He added that the ministry would "actively leverage private manufacturing infrastructure and regional strengths to help promising manufacturing startups establish themselves locally and advance into global markets."
